Reading Pals

Reading Pals is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that began in Chico, California, more than a decade ago. A group of passionate community members came together with one goal in mind—helping local students develop strong reading skills and succeed in school.

At Reading Pals, we know you care deeply about the next generation and want to give back to your community. It’s natural to wonder if you have the time, the right skills, or whether your efforts will truly make a difference. The good news is—you do, and they will.

Every child deserves the chance to become a confident learner, well-prepared for a successful future. With that belief, we partnered with local schools to tackle one of their greatest challenges: ensuring every student learns to read with confidence. Our model is simple but powerful: one student, one volunteer, one hour a week. Since Reading Pals started, more than 2,000 students have changed the story of their lives through Reading Pals.

When students complete the program, they leave with much more than improved reading skills. They gain self-esteem, confidence, and the belief that they can achieve. These are gifts that last a lifetime.

We are excited to share that Shasta County now has 11 school sites hosting Reading Pals! Volunteers can give just one hour a week—or two hours if you’d like to work with multiple students.

Join us and help rewrite a brighter story for students in Shasta County.
